FAQ
The LSRA is extending the runway as part of Phase I of the LSRA strategic plan to enhance corporate aviation activity and improve safety and reliability across all airport operations. A longer runway provides additional margin for safe aircraft landings and takeoffs, particularly during winter conditions when braking performance and visibility can be compromised. This extension also enhances operational flexibility, allowing aircraft to operate more safely under a wider range of weather and performance scenarios. Overall, the project reflects LSRA’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety for passengers, crews, and airport personnel.
The runway extension is of public interest because it directly contributes to safer and more reliable air travel for passengers. It also supports the airport’s ability to handle a broader range of aircraft and flight operations, which can lead to improved connectivity and service options for the community. At its core, this project demonstrates a steadfast commitment to public safety and aligns with our strategic vision—delivering meaningful benefits to everyone who depends on the airport.
There will be little to no impact on residents or property owners as a result of the runway extension. No alterations to existing flight paths or notable shifts in airport operations are anticipated. Extending the runway to 7,000 feet would enable corporate aircraft to take off at or near maximum weight in various conditions, allowing for longer trips and enhancing connectivity, accessibility, and travel efficiency. This initiative is a safety-driven improvement that benefits the traveling public without disrupting the local community.
Construction will occur over a 2 year period, anticipated to start in Spring 2026 and be completed at the end of 2027. Year 1 of construction will be focused on the culvert installation and earth works, while year two will focus on the runway pavements and electrical systems.
The LSRA is currently in the early planning and public consultation stages of the runway extension project. This means we are actively gathering input from stakeholders, evaluating design options, consulting with approval agencies (Department of Fisheries and Transport Canada) and assessing any operational considerations. Community feedback is an important part of this phase, and we’re committed to keeping residents informed and involved as the project moves forward.
If you have any questions about the runway extension project or would like to share your feedback, you can contact us by email at airportfeedback@simcoe.ca. You can also submit questions or comments through our online form. We welcome your input and are committed to keeping the community informed throughout the planning process.
No, there has not been any physical construction work done in preparation for the runway extension. Note that some elements of Phase I of the strategic plan have been completed or are ongoing, including runway widening (completed 2021), certification process (ongoing) and a Master Servicing Study.
